Finally, at 85, I am beginning to understand this, which I think fits in: We see our own lack of “faith” in the spiritual walk, and so we ask our Father to increase our faith, please! He proceeds to answer our prayer by sending/allowing certain problems to come our way. We respond often by discouragement and questioning........without realizing that the “problem” is our means and pathway to the increase we have asked Him for! It is our opportunity to reach out and TRUST Him in ways we have not done in the past....Thereby.....Increasing our faith and trust in HIM! This can be true whether the source of the problem is demonic or God Himself leading us into challenging territory. For me, the hardest lessons seem to be the simple trust in Him...WITHOUT all information or possibilities laid out!

Chip, a timely word from the Spirit as usual. I would only add one thing. Sometimes I think God wants us to develop our relationship with him through our difficulties. There are some things we can only learn through pain and trial. This is not a popular subject in today's triumphalist church but I perceive that we need to remember it.

I always recall at times like these, the wisdom of Hebrews 11:32-12:3. For all those who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised, they were matched with those who were tortured, destitute, persecuted and ill-treated, 'of whom the world was not worthy'. Yet they were all commended for their faith. It is our faith that matters, not our success. I always ask myself in times of difficulty, 'what do you want me to learn from this, Lord?'

'Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith...'

In reply to <a href="https://theschoolofchrist.org/dealing-with-difficulty#comment-1941">Alicia Kozicki</a>.

Dear Alicia, I think most of us have has that same problem. The worries and concerns of the day, MANY thoughts try to flood our heads. Worry and anxiety are the worst offenders.(See Phil.4:6-7). But when we train our minds to think on God and His attributes, we look TO Him our minds become quiet His still small voice is able to minister to us. The story of Martha and Mary is so applicable to this. Just sit at His feet and be filled with Him....not what has to be done today.

Thanks, this helps a lot, I am encouraged by the things that were said about the difference between spiritual discernment being a process of maturity which develops over a period of time [that explains and helps clarify Hebrews 5:14] and the gift of discerning of spirits in 1 Cor. 12 as being able to recognize the devil and deal with him. Hab. 2:2 says, "And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it." Thank you again

Years now of facing this difficulty, the last 3 times I felt unable to wait and grabbed my own way out. I have been brought back to the same hopeless situation now for the 4th time. I told the Lord that this time I would wait on Him and do this His way. I'm really strained and stressed though waiting on an answer that never seems to come. Obedience and faith and patience are exhausting when facing such powerful opposition. Doubt sets in.

Thank you Chip.
Your message today has truly touched my heart. We have to stand up and take charge or sit down and wait. In my ignorant state 5 or so years ago, I wished I could have been better discerning and wiser with what was happening to me and my house hold. So much tragedy has happened spiritually to one in my household that I was supposed to protect but at the time I truly did not know better and I was a young believer. After this walk of uncertainty and looking back, I know for certain it was an attack of the enemy and the Lord was trying to get my attention with road blocks to stop some decisions that could not be fixed after the fact. I even had people praying over my circumstances for a break through and nothing came to my attention as a warning. I know in my heart the Lord will bring all things together for good in the end. I have learned some very very hard lessons by not stopping and being still to hear from God, instead I pressed on to what I thought was right to find out it wasn't.
