Ah, but He did also follow the letter of the law. It was the Pharisee that wanted to circumvent the letter of the law and He caught them in the very snare they tried to lay for Him! For to convict the woman, they had to catch her in the act, plus they had to be not guilty of the act themselves. (Aside from that, where was the man also caught with her?) Each of these accusers were guilty of the same crime and thus could NOT cast the first stone!

We don't know what Jesus wrote in the soil with His finger, but perhaps it was the names/dates of their sins with perhaps this same woman? We do know it was the same finger that wrote the Law though!

The trap the Pharisee's laid was, if He says to not stone her, He breaks the law of the Jews and would then be guilty in their eyes. Yet if He says yes, stone her, then He breaks the Roman law they were bound to! Thus they felt sure they had Him cornered and defeated! Yet none could see that He had them, because the first stone cast must come from an eye witness who was also innocent of the crime they were prosecuting as per their laws/traditions!

This is an amazing story and turn of events, for we serve an awesome and Holy God!
