In reply to <a href="https://theschoolofchrist.org/october14#comment-5604">sherry</a>.

Sherry, I think a key word in what you said is "willing". We should be willing to part with it all. Jesus said, "So therefore, any one of you who does not RENOUNCE ALL that he has cannot be my disciple." This renunciation is a HEART issue, not necessarily a literal renunciation. Remember the story of Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22. "Take your son, your only son Isaac, WHOM YOU LOVE, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering." Abraham thought this was to be a literal sacrifice, but God was testing him. Was Abraham's love for Isaac greater than his love for God? And right before Abraham slayed his son, God stopped him.

In many cases, God will tell you to surrender something, and then will give it back to you. Perhaps it's a position you've been offered but are not sure is God's plan. Perhaps it's a person you'd like to marry but are not sure it's God's will for you. Perhaps it's your ministry calling.
God wants us to give it ALL to Him, and then HE decides what He gives back. What we get back, we don't get back the same way, but with resurrection power.

I believe the "crown of life" is for overcomers only, as in the other passages in Revelation. Overcomers here in John's words are those who repent. No, this side of eternity, we won't be perfect, but we KEEP surrendering, we KEEP repenting, we KEEP dying. Of course, "eternal life" is something different, and it's for believers, yes. But you may make it to life without any crowns, as 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 states: "If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire."

If I'm understanding correctly, some people will be saved, but will receive little or NO reward for their works, because when they were building, they were not building according to the Only Foundation, which is Jesus Christ. They got sidetracked by other things that were not so important.

I hope this helps!

This daily dying to self can be a problem at times. There are many things that can cloud our focus on our objective. Things like our ego, our pride, even the culture and environment we are living in. When we begin to recognize the little subtle influences that can easily cause us to not want to die to self, then we begin to win the battle daily.

Through some good instructions from a dear brother, he pointed out some things that can very easily cause us to yield to our self-centered desires. For example; unwillingness to face a difficult situation, unwilling to face the consequences of our own actions, not willing to be disturbed, having a hidden agenda, and wanting to be in control, just to name a few.

We all have to deal with these everyday, that is why a place like what Chip has established is so very important. The one thing that I think is the greatest need in the body of Christ is what is called body ministry.

Body minister is a place where we can be openly honest about our struggles, our misunderstandings and the like, and not be treated like we are some kind of a weirdo, and be shunned and rejected. We need to be able to listen, support, encourage, and even walk with someone through a difficult time that may require being honest and firm at times. We need to stop putting "bandaids" on serious wounds and sores and allow the true healing of God to flow.

To me this is part of what I believe Romans 8:19 is talking about when is talks about the "manifestation of the sons of God".

Yes we all have to die daily.

None of us, if we are truly honest with ourselves, are deserving of such a gift, "the Crown of Life". So precious it is! We are granted such in God's mercy and grace. Jesus knows us all better than we know ourselves with all our faults and weaknesses. And still He asks of us to raise up our thoughts, feelings, and affections on a altar of Self sacrifice and denial to Him daily. Our cross. We are those "living altar stones", the ekklesia, that will receive His blessing. We can be thankful that the sacrifice He asks from each of us; is not some punishment for guilt, or a game of just saying the right words, or, of proving our worthiness in the sacrifice, or, of bargaining for the right favor, for some, to move ahead on this narrow path. But simply coming just as we are, to Him who knows us, to let His love touch us, and to receive of His free gift of Life. Thank You Lord! We will cast ALL at your feet and bend our knees to You alone. Amen.

Thank you for your reply, it has settled my mind. I knew by faith and by the power of Gods Spirit that I was born again spiritually into Christ, but there are so many verses that are confusing and are hard to interpret without more knowledge. Is the crown of life for all who are born again or just for those that endured much persecution and obeyed completely until the end? I don't know if there is a difference between the crown of life and eternal treasure? I'm remembering the rich young ruler and Jesus told him to go and sell all he had and give it the poor, Jesus really meant what He said to him. Does Christ really want us to have very little if any material possessions?, or is He just wanting to see if we would be willing to part with all we have and to be penniless and homeless if need be, to test if poverty and persecution would be excepted by us without murmuring or heart broken over our loss? Of course there is always the story of Job as an example. Even with Christ, He was a man on this earth that was also fully God, yet looking on the outward appearance one would assume He was a very poor man with nothing, How in the world could He be the Messiah, God of heaven and earth. If we are to be an example of Christ and die to self, this may have to be a possibility. I'm thinking of all those prosperity preachers and innocent souls that fall for such lies. I used to be in a similar setting, thank goodness Jesus called me out of such idol worship and nonsense.
Any response would be appreciated.

We haven't died to Self yet - that's where I think the misunderstanding is. If everyone who came to Jesus was dead to Self then we wouldn't need to take up the Cross daily, and the Body of Christ would all be perfectly mature. But they aren't. That's why it says, "As you received Christ Jesus the Lord [the Gate] so walk in Him [the Path]." You died to sin when you were born-again; that is the Narrow Gate. You're still in the process of dying to Self; that is the Difficult Path. It takes both. Salvation was settled when you passed through the Gate. The issue now is not being saved or getting forgiveness - the issue now is growing up and becoming spiritually mature. Dying to Self (and being conformed to Christ) is a Path you walk every day.

I read the 2 fold work of the cross. I'm still not quite understanding. When I excepted Jesus for who He is and what He has accomplished for me and I believe and have faith that my sins are forgiven because I called upon Him to set me free from myself and eternal damnation, when Gods word says that, all that call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, He did say and also you have to do this, this and this to make your salvation complete. When I called upon the name of the Lord to save my soul and was born again into Christ, I don't have to fear a second death. Is this not what Revelations 2v11 is speaking of. My understanding is that I was born the first time into this life from my mother's womb, and when I died to self and was baptized unto Him and was born again to have a new second birth and I have been raised up to have a new life in Christ and when I die the second time, it only a death of my mortal body but my spirit lives on with Christ and one day my spirit will be connected to my new heavenly body. My interpretation of this verse is that I was faithful until the end of myself, until I excepted Christ as my Lord and Savior and now I have the crown of life that's in Christ. I am complete in Him. My obedience after my salvation is because I love Him and I desire to please Him and He expects me to obey as to not be hindered by the devil, just as He said in verse 10. He said that some of us will be thrown into prison to be tested and we will have tribulation for a period of time, I'm not certain if this is before salvation or after? I'm still trying to sort this out.

This is a verse I have struggled with ever since I've come to know the Lord. I did not know I had to die multiple deaths, as though it was up to me to keep my salvation or my rightful place with the Lord. This verse sounds like a works salvation, that we as sinful people have to work to obtain. It's as though the death of Christ and what He accomplished on the cross is not good enough, that I have to add to it with self effort. How can this be a work of Christ alone? When will good enough on my part ever be good enough for Him? It's impossible! I don't know if I have misinterpreted this verse or I don't understand your reply compared to this verse?
