00. Introduction: The Redemptive Purpose of God

God has a much bigger view in mind for our salvation than taking us to heaven one day. God calls us to something higher, something more, than “mere” salvation (if I can say it that way). Who saves us? What are we saved FOR? What are we saved FROM? Answering these questions goes way beyond a kindergarten discussion of heaven and hell. In fact, Scripture reveals a marvelous plan that includes salvation, but goes beyond salvation, and also includes healing, deliverance, and reconciliation. It’s called Redemption – and that’s what we will explore in this series of messages.

01. The Redemptive Purpose of Salvation

The first step in God’s Redemptive Purpose is to save the world. This starts with saving us from satan and his lies; only then can we receive the forgiveness of sins, which is the Second Birth. But the work of salvation continues until we are literally “saved from our selves,” which is the transformation of Self through perfection in Love. It is in this sense that salvation is past, present, and future – not just Jesus in the Cross, but Jesus in my heart, provides for a full, complete, and total salvation from satan, from Sin, and from Self.

02. The Redemptive Purpose of Healing

Yes, God does save today, and God does heal today. These are properly called “miracles.” But until we see all things submitted to the preeminence of Christ, we will continue to experience sickness and death. This does not reflect poorly on your faith or on God’s Will; it only reflects the fallen world we live in and a lack of love. Creation itself groans and travails in pain along with us, waiting for the final redemption and full healing of our spirit, soul, and body. In the meantime, believe God for your healing as much as you do for your salvation. Resist sickness and death just as you resist the devil. Both your salvation and your healing is a work in progress that will, sooner or later, result in full, total, and complete deliverance from sin, sickness, sorrow, and death when God makes all things new.

03. The Redemptive Purpose of Deliverance

Jesus sent Paul “to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light and from the power of satan to God.” God will not do this unilaterally; He needs compassionate collaborators, partners, willing participants, people to reach people. It is vitally important that we be part of the process. And, while we are assured of God’s desire to set the captives free and rid the world of evil, we do not passively wait for deliverance in the future, but actively pray for it now, and seek it not just for ourselves, but for “us” and for “all.” We collaborate with God in righteous anger and active resistance against evil, showing compassion for those who are still bound; and it is in this spirit and power that we overcome the Dragon. This prepares the way for the final phase of God’s redemptive purpose, which we will reveal in the next message.

04. The Redemptive Purpose of Reconciliation

We have seen in this series that the Redemptive Purpose of God begins with salvation – the forgiveness of sins. From there, God begins to make us into new creations, bringing health and healing to our spirit, soul, and body. And, since we still live in a fallen world, God actively delivers us from evil by working together with us to overcome evil with good. Ultimately, the Redemptive Purpose of God results in reconciliation, the restitution of all things, putting things back to where they should be, and restoring everything that was damaged, lost, or stolen. No more tears, no more pain, no more death, no more curse – but all things gathered together in Christ, “that God may be All in All.”
